Google CEO Sundar Pichai
It appears that Google isn’t done with layoffs with more job cuts expected throughout the year according to an internal memo sent to the staff by CEO, Sundar Pichai. This comes just days after the tech company laid off hundreds of employees across various departments.
Pichai tells employees to “brace for more cuts” as the company works to “remove layers to simplify execution and drive velocity in some areas,” as reported by The Verge.
With the recent layoffs affecting Google’s advertising, hardware, and core engineering divisions in what the company says is part of organizational restructuring, the CEO adds that Google will have to make “tough choices” to meet its ambitious goals this year.
“The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices,” reads part of Pichai’s memo sent to the staff.” Many of these changes are already announced, though to upfront, some teams will continue to make specific resource allocation decisions throughout the year where needed, and some roles may be impacted.”
Pichai further stated that the 2024 expected job cuts will not be at the scale of last year’s, which saw Google lay off 12,000 employees. Furthermore, not every team will face layoffs, he added.
Google layoffs have also impacted its video-sharing platform, YouTube, with 100 employees laid off on Wednesday. According to Tubefilter, the cuts at YouTube were part of restructuring changes to its creator management and operations teams, as per an internal memo sent to staff by the platform’s chief business officer, Mary Ellen Coe.
