Grandmother charged in death of 4-week-old granddaughter

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) – A grandmother has been arrested and is facing charges in connection to the 2021 death of her 4-week-old granddaughter in Bridgeport, according to police.

61-year-old Eleanor Herman was arrested Tuesday and is facing charges of second-degree manslaughter and risk of injury to a child.

Police said they responded to a report in February 2021 of an infant not breathing in the 100 block of Bronx Avenue. She was transported to a local hospital before police arrived at the scene by her uncle and was pronounced dead shortly after.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the baby’s death a homicide and that the cause of death was acute intoxication from the combined effects of fentanyl and para-fluorofentanyl.

During the investigation, police determined that Herman was the sole caregiver for the baby for more than three hours leading to her death. Herman also had a history of heroin abuse and lived with her granddaughter at the time of her death.

Herman is expected to be arranged on Jan. 24.
